The 2024 season will begin on Thursday, May 30; weather permitting. Races begin at 6pm.
2022 Racing Season begins June 2
The target date for the opening night of racing is Thursday, June 2nd, weather permitting. The first race will start at 6:00. As we have done the past few years, we’ll decide the course on the water before each race and relay it to all the sailors. Please be prepared to record your times in the event no one is available on shore. I’ll compile them at the end of the evening and send out the results.
Dues will be $10 again this year. For those who want to either have their races scored or just support the club, please pay me by June 30th and make sure I write it down. Thank you to those who have already paid.
New Flagpole
For those that haven’t been to Holmes Lake recently, we have a replacement flagpole. The City of Lincoln Parks and Recreation had one available that was the right size. After attaching the old yard arm and cleats, the new pole was installed in the old concrete base. A big “thank you” to the Holmes Lake Park maintenance staff for finding a replacement pole and putting it in the ground for us. Also, thank you to Dave Brown and Rich Andrysik for helping to install the hardware.

The Ceremonies program includes a special skydiver demo, highlights of past ceremonies, video messages from Governor Pete Ricketts and Lincoln Mayor Leirion Gaylor-Baird, the national anthem performed by statewide contest winner Claire Ehlers, 16, of Lincoln, and the lighting of the Games caldron by a mystery torchlighter. Most of the 5,300 registered athletes will be in action with 29 sports taking place this weekend, beginning with golf, sand- and grass-volleyball and the new high-school age soccer tournament, which has proven popular for players that had their spring high school season cancelled over health concerns. Eight sports were held last weekend and 20 more will be staged on the Games’ final weekend July 24-26. More than 100 canine athletes are signed up for the lone new sport, the Super Retriever Series, which begins next Friday, July 24. A composite schedule of events can be viewed HERE. Games officials have worked closely with the Lincoln-Lancaster County Health Department to determine COVID-19 safety guidelines for each sport. Many sports are still accepting participants. 2020 June 25 Races
Races canceled for June 18, 2020
A message from the club commodore: Due to the forecast of inclement weather tonight’s races are canceled. We’ll try again next week.
Sailing will begin June 4, 2020
Opening night for the Holmes Lake Sailing Club 2020 season will be Thursday, June 4th (weather permitting). The first race will start at 6:00. As you are all aware, life has been anything but normal the past few months and we’ll need to make a few changes to follow current local health recommendations (https://www.lincoln.ne.gov/city/covid19/).
- If you’re not feeling well, please do not come to the lake. It’s also more than OK for anyone to sit out for a while if they or someone they interact with are at higher risk for COVID-19 complications.
- Practice social distancing while rigging, launching, and retrieving your boat. Spread out along the beach and parking lot. The dock is the most challenging place to maintain distancing and ideally only one boat crew should be on the dock at a time. Sail only with individuals from your household. Don’t switch boats or take on extra crew between races. Those watching from shore should also maintain social distancing.
- Face coverings are recommended on shore (including the dock) but not while on the water. Wash or sanitize your hands as soon as feasible after touching high contact surfaces.
- Race committee will be done on the water, at least to start the season. This means no flags for the 3 minute starting sequence. Be prepared to record your own race times and e-mail them to me along with any handicap modifiers. The start/finish line will be the flagpole and the nearest buoy. The first boat on the water will set the courses for the evening, just make sure everyone knows the course. As a general guideline, I’d like to aim for shorter races (15-20 minutes per race for the slowest boat) to increase the number of total races this season.
